Centre for Child Care - Community Bantala - Kolkata.

The community of Bantala consists of very poor and small villages in the southeastern region of Kolkata, on the outskirts of the city. Located around a wetland area, this community is one of the poorest in the city. The main work sources in Bantala are fish farms and agriculture but work is extremely precarious and family incomes normally do not exceed 60-80 rupees a day (about one Euro). Alcohol use, domestic violence and a lack of motivation for education are some of the main problems in this area.

ME IMPORTAS, along with the local DEVELOPMENT ACTION SOCIETY (D.A.S.), which has more than twenty years of experience in working with disadvantaged communities and with the protection of the Rights of Children and Women, manages a Children Care Centre in Bantala, a centre that provides the community the following services:

- Pre-primary School.

- An inclusion and supervision programme for the children of Bantala in the
national primary cycle.

- Workshops for local mothers and fathers about awareness and empowerment on
the subject of Child and Women Rights and Protection.
